The ALLIANCE has written to Lord Brailsford, new chair of the Scottish COVID-19 inquiry.

On 27 October 2022, it was announced that the Hon. Lord Brailsford would be appointed as new chair of the Scottish COVID-19 inquiry (this link will take you away from our website). The appointment follows the resignation of Lady Poole as inquiry chair.

John Swinney, Deputy First Minister, also confirmed an amendment will be made to the inquiry’s terms of reference to include a clear reference to a human rights based approach.

The ALLIANCE has written to Lord Brailsford to congratulate him on his appointment as chair. We welcome the amendment to the inquiry’s terms of reference to include a clear reference to human rights. In 2022, the ALLIANCE and other civil society organisations called for a human rights based inquiry to understand fully the intersectional human rights implications of decision making during the pandemic, and the impact on individuals, families, and carers.

To ensure human rights are embedded throughout the inquiry, we believe that all participation, communication, and analysis processes should be framed within a clear, robust, and transparent human rights framework.

It is important that the inquiry continues to progress without delay and prioritises the voices of those with lived experience. The ALLIANCE has offered to support engagement work as part of the inquiry and to meet with Lord Brailsford to explore opportunities for working together with our members.
