The Self Management Awards 2020-2022 Celebration Event was held in Scottish Parliament on 23 November 2022, from 6-8pm.
The event was sponsored by Gillian Mackay MSP and hosted by Laura Boyd of STV News, with over 120 people attending to celebrate the achievements of Self Management Awards winners from the last three years.
The annual Awards ceremony promotes a wide range of self management work, celebrating good practice, and drawing MSPs’ and health and social care practitioners’ attention to the value and impact of self management. As the Awards for the past three years were held online due to COVID-19, the Celebration Event in Parliament provided an opportunity for winners to celebrate their success and network in person with others leading the way for self management in Scotland.
The event was opened by Laura Boyd, who introduced the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Humza Yousaf. In his speech, Mr Yousaf spoke at length of the positive changes self management brings both for individuals and for service provision and thanked all winners, nominees and attendees for their exceptional work in promoting person centred engagement through self management activities across Scotland.
Event sponsor Gillian Mackay, MSP for Central Scotland, welcomed the attendees and congratulated all the winners, noting how impressed and inspired she was by all the work, and how those nominated were also deserving of recognition. She then presented the 2022 winners with their awards.
Candice McKenzie, co-founder of Endo Warriors West Lothian and Self Management Champion of the Year 2021 spoke about her work raising awareness of endometriosis and the positive impact Endo Warriors West Lothian’s engagements have on supporting individuals’ self management of the condition.
Before the announcement and celebration of the 2022 winners, Sara Redmond, ALLIANCE Chief Officer of Development, gave an account of the journey of self management in Scotland to date, and highlighted that,
“Together we are changing the face and shape of self management in Scotland – deepening and broadening our understanding of what self management can mean. Tonight is a celebration of all that you, and many others are doing across the country: supporting each other and channelling lived experience into positive solutions.”
